Skim is a free PDF reader for Mac, which also comes with more advanced features, including the ability to add notes, draw figures and so on. Since it is open-source, you can download it for free. We have tested the application on a MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks.
The user interface is quite simple. Skim is basically split into three sections with thumbnails on the left side and notes on the right site. At the top of the application you have access to different tools used to add notes, circles, boxes and so on to your document. That is the basic functionality of Skim, but there are also other settings to play around with in the preferences.
However, even though Skim is a great application, the built-in Preview application on Mac comes with a lot of the same functionality, including the ability to annotate files. Therefore, we can not recommend Skim if you are already satisfied with Apple’s own application.

There are two types: one that appears on top of the document and another one that is represented by a little icon that stores all of the note's content. The second option is great when the text of the note is rather long. The other things that you can do with this program are: underline, cross things out, highlight text, circle things to point out concepts, etc.
The tree view on the left shows the relationship between the different pages in the document. On the right, it shows the relationship between notes, arrows, underlining, circles and all of the other objects that you have inserted in a page.
